It’s been a decade. Then, almost overnight, Roku’s home screen looked different. They added a giant ad. They slapped in a “For You” section. The whole layout got an update no one explicitly voted for, yet here we are.
If you hate it? Good. You can break the new default settings back into something tolerable in under two minutes.
The “For You” Section Is a Glitch, Not a Feature
Let’s be real. The “For You” section helps if you are paralyzed by choice. But if I want to watch Fallout, I don’t need an AI telling me what to eat for breakfast. I need to find the show. Fast.
Here’s the kicker: the new interface isn’t actually keeping track of my watch history properly. The shiny “Continue Watching” tile should bridge that gap. It doesn’t talk to the “For You” algorithm. It sits there, lonely and unlinked, while your “For You” row pushes Taylor Sheridan content at you because… why not?
I tested this on a fresh Roku Ultra. I logged in. I have a history of watching sci-fi. And the algorithm decided I love religious movies and nature documentaries. That’s not personalization. That’s a glitch.
How to Delete Specific Suggestions From Your Feed
Sometimes the recommendations are just wrong. Maybe the algorithm picked up a random viewing of a Marshalls sale commercial and now won’t stop showing you home improvement shows. You want to teach Roku your taste without wiping the entire screen clean.
You can remove specific tiles. Here is how:
- Highlight the thumbnail you despise.
- Press the * button (the asterisk on the star key) on your remote.
- Select I don’t like this title.
The algorithm notes your distaste. It learns. Sort of.
It does not remove the shortcut instantly. I hit the power button, let the box sleep, and woke it up. Now the tile is gone. New suggestions populate the void. Sometimes, Roku gets stubborn. A show like The Savanna Bananas might refuse to vanish, offering only Add to Save List. Ignore them. Wait until morning. Sometimes the tiles just vanish on their own, vanquished by time and server syncs we don’t understand.
How to Hide the Entire For You Row
Personalized suggestions are a luxury some people don’t want to buy into. They clutter the view. They slow down navigation.
You don’t need to hunt for specific shows if you never watch that section. You can delete the entire row from the main display.
Navigate to Settings.
Select Home Screen.
Go to Recommendation Rows.
Choose Hide under the “For You” header.
Done. The row vanishes. The giant ad stays, though. Sorry. But at least you’ve cleared the visual noise from the primary viewing zone.
How to Move Continue Watching to Quick Access
The new interface hides your own progress behind a menu you rarely use. If you have three shows halfway done, hunting for them in a dropdown list is a pain.
Move “Continue Watching” to the Quick Access bar at the bottom. It becomes permanent. Immediate.
- Scroll to the bottom of the home page.
- Find the Jump to section.
- Highlight Continue Watching.
- Press the * button.
- Select Add to Quick Access.
The tile moves to the bottom. You hit the center button on your remote. Boom. Shows are listed.
But it’s flaky. I added the tile. It worked for six hours. Then it vanished. Roku decided the shortcut had expired. You might need to repeat this step if you reset your device or after a software update. Just accept that it works when it feels like it.
How to Remove the Quick Access Bar Completely
The Quick Access bar used to be a list of channels you actually use. Now it’s a graveyard of dead shortcuts and irrelevant recommendations. It’s supposed to speed things up. It often just distracts you.
You can delete it. All of it.
- Go to Settings.
- Click Home Screen.
- Select Quick Access.
- Switch to Hide.
The bottom bar is gone. You have more screen real estate. Less clutter. No more accidental clicks on thumbnails that lead you to ads you didn’t click for.
The screen looks clean again. Ready for you to navigate your way. Not the other way around. It’s not perfect, but it’s closer to the interface Roku had when you actually owned your attention.
