June 17 NYT Strands Answers: Don’t Look for Animals Here

14

The puzzle was a trap. Well. Maybe just a trick.

I spent way too much time hunting for animal names. Big mistake. It’s the barnyard theme. That sounds like livestock, right? Wrong.

It’s about the equipment. The hardware. Not the beasts pulling the plow.

If you are stuck here is a clue:

Not animals.

The Answers

Once you shift your gaze away from the cows you find the metal. And wood. And wheels.

The spangram connects across the whole board: FARMING. Start at the far left column fourth letter down and snake your way over.

Everything else fits inside that word. Here is the rest of the gear you need to find:

  • BUCKET
  • TRACTOR
  • SAWHORSE
  • PITCHFORK
  • WHEELBARROW

Why did I waste time on HORSE? Because “Workhorse” is a valid word in the grid. It distracts you. It pulls your brain in a circle. You find HORSES. You find BUCK. You think you are winning. You aren’t.

Unlocking the Hints

You want to see the hidden words sooner? Find three any-words with four or more letters.

I used these to trigger the help:

  • HORSE
  • WORKHORSE
  • PALE
  • FORK
  • SING
  • RING
  • GREW

Does it matter which words? No. As long as they are long enough.

When Strands Gets Hard

Some days the puzzle bites back. I remember one that asked for dated slang. I failed. Who even knows what “phat” meant without an internet archive?

Another time the ocean won. Marine biology trivia. Who has BALEEN at the top of their tongue? Maybe not you.

The point is not to be perfect. The point is to fill the board. Once every letter is claimed you are done.

What was your worst misdirection today? Did you almost fall for it too?
