You probably don’t sell shatterproof glass to Hollywood, which means the phrase “built to break” isn’t exactly a selling point. Yet, for anyone who has bought an electronic device in the last fifteen years, it feels like your laptop or phone expires the moment you unbox it. The question isn’t just rhetorical anymore. Are computers actually designed to fail?

The data suggests they are.

A 2009 report from warranty specialist SquareTrade revealed that roughly 20% of laptops and 24% of budget netbooks suffer a hardware malfunction within their first three years. That is a significant failure rate for devices marketed as durable tools. But hardware failure is only half the story. Often, the device still works fine physically. It just can’t run the latest software.

This is where planned obsolescence kicks in. New operating systems and application updates frequently drop support for older hardware. The machine isn’t broken. It’s just obsolete. The Economist has noted that this is a core business strategy for computer manufacturers. By the time a current generation of processors hits the market, the next one is already in development. The goal isn’t longevity. It’s turnover.

The Design of Failure

A 2013 study commissioned by Germany’s Green Party went deeper. It concluded that electronic goods lasting less than two years are likely built poorly on purpose. Or at the very least, the manufacturers know exactly how short their product’s life will be.

How do they ensure this? Look at the battery. Many smartphones and notebooks are designed with non-replaceable power cells. Glue replaces screws. Cases are sealed shut. You aren’t meant to open them. You aren’t meant to fix them.

There are other tricks, too. Some laptops feature heat-sensitive capacitors placed on the hottest parts of the circuit board. They are positioned precisely where heat damage is most likely. When they fail, the device dies. Unavailable replacement parts ensure you can’t just swap them out. Even if you find a repair shop, the labor and parts often cost nearly as much as a new device.

The Consumer Reality

So, is it intentional? Unless manufacturers suddenly decide to confess, we may never have a smoking gun. But the evidence is mounting. Whether it’s a deliberate strategy to drive sales or just a ruthless optimization for short-term profit, the result is the same for you.

Modern consumer electronics are not built to last. They are built to be replaced.
