You might be thinking, “I’ve seen 5G smartphones in stores.” you would be right. But can hardware really do that? What does the network on the ground look like?
Let’s find out. We are standing next to a Vodafone mobile tower with a 5G antenna. We took 5G compatible smartphones. We tested the features of 5G. Let’s compare this directly to what LTE can’t do.
Hardware Gap
First of all, let me be clear. Seeing this difference requires special equipment.
Standard LTE phones will not connect to these new frequencies. They lack the modem hardware for 5G. The market is full of 5G compatible smartphones. You can buy one today. But the mobile phone alone is only half the battle.
Infrastructure realities
Network coverage is the other half.
Vodafone was one of the first operators to install 5G antennas. We visited the site of one of them. The antenna itself is not a giant alien-like structure. A stylish, modern panel mounted on a tower.
But the signals they send are different. Works on frequency bands that enable higher data transfer. The promise is simple. Even more data. Less latency.
What we tested
