Pokémon Winds and Waves: Next-Gen Adventure Confirmed for Switch 2

Pokémon Winds and Waves, the first mainline installment designed specifically for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, was unveiled during a 30th-anniversary livestream. The game is slated for a 2027 release and will be exclusive to the new console.

A Return to Open-World Exploration

The latest Pokémon adventure appears to follow the open-world format introduced with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. However, Winds and Waves takes this concept further, setting the action across a sprawling archipelago. Players will navigate between islands separated by vast stretches of ocean, creating a dynamic and expansive map.

This design echoes the beloved water-focused gameplay of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (2002), signaling a deliberate nod to the franchise’s roots.

First Look at Generation 10 Starters

As is tradition, the reveal included the new starter Pokémon:

  • Browt (Grass-type): A bird Pokémon with a uniquely shaped head.
  • Gecqua (Water-type): A quadrupedal gecko known for its cool demeanor.
  • Pombon (Fire-type): A charming orange pup with a striking mane.

Early reactions suggest Pombon may quickly become the most popular choice among fans.

Familiar Faces in a New Setting

The game will feature a mix of returning Pokémon, including fan favorites like Pikachu, Tympole, Wailord, Tropius, and Frillish. Many of these creatures appear to inhabit environments tailored to the island theme: volcanic caves, swampy wetlands, and underwater coves.

Addressing Past Performance Issues

The announcement arrives four years after Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which, while innovative, faced criticism for technical issues on the original Nintendo Switch. Winds and Waves, built for the more powerful Switch 2 hardware, is expected to deliver a smoother and more stable gaming experience.

The franchise is also experimenting with new battle systems, as seen in the recently announced Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and cozy life simulation gameplay with Pokémon Pokopia.

A Multi-Platform Push

To keep fans engaged, Nintendo is also releasing Pokémon Champions, a competitive battling game, on the Switch in April, with a mobile version following later this year.

These releases will bridge the gap until the full launch of Pokémon Winds and Waves in 2027, promising a fresh chapter in the beloved franchise.

The Switch 2 exclusivity underscores Nintendo’s commitment to leveraging its new hardware to deliver a premium Pokémon experience. The open-world format, combined with the return of familiar creatures and a focus on performance, could set a new standard for the series.
