The Gated AI Garden 🇨🇳

The doors are closing. Not gently, either. China’s best AI minds are being locked in. Researchers. Startup founders. Executives. They need government clearance to board a plane now. It’s not a suggestion.

Beijing sees this as talent retention. You could call it a brain-drain stopgap. The demand to tweak models is skyrocketing, and the world is hungry. So they are keeping their assets close. Very close.

The Travel Ban Reality

Remember March 2025? The Wall Street Journal ran a piece advising Chinese AI heavyweights to stay away from the U.S. An early warning. AI isn’t just economics anymore. It is national security.

Then came the Manus incident.

Beijing narrowed its lens. The financial giant Meta wanted to buy AI startup Manus for $2 billion. Good luck. China barred the two co-founders from exiting the country. Why? To see if the deal breaks foreign investment laws. According to the Financial Times, the founders are now scrambling to unwind the mess.

They’re looking for about $1 billion from outside investors to buy the company back from Facebook’s parent company. Just to get the green light. A pricey freedom ticket.

The Gap Shrinks

Is America still leading? The numbers are getting uncomfortable for the West. Stanford’s latest index tells a stark story. Back in 2023? A 31% gap between top U.S. and Chinese models. By March 2026?

Just 2.7%.

It is razor-thin.

Sure. The U.S. still holds the crown for raw model quality. High-impact patents? Also American. But volume? Publications? Citations? China is flooding the zone. If they are outpacing American labs on the back end, the front end might not save the day for long.

The performance gap isn’t just shrinking. It’s disappearing.

Capital Controls Follow

It’s not just about where researchers can travel. It’s about who owns the tech.

Bloomberg reported in April that Beijing is planning stricter checks on U.S. money flowing into top Chinese AI firms. Big names like Moonshot AI. StepFun. ByteDance.

They want government sign-off. Every dollar needs a stamp.

So we have restricted movement. Restricted capital. A race where the finish line keeps moving. Who really wins when the borders shut? The labs stay in the cage, training faster, but never leaving. It’s efficient, in a brutal sort of way. And honestly? It’s working.
